2009 one ounce gold - ultra high relief St. Gaudens

The latest Coin World mag reports that the US Mint is set to go ahead with plans to mint an ultra high relief St. Gaudens.

The mintage of the new coin will be unlimited for for 2009 and into 2010, and all coins will bear the roman numeral date MMIX.

The coins will have a diameter of 27mm, which is much smaller than the pre-1934 double eagles. The new coins will be about 50% thicker than the old double eagles.

The coins will be .9999 gold instead of the 90% gold-copper alloy of the old double eagles.

The design will be based on the original Saint-Gaudens high relief design struck in 1907 but will have some changes.

Apparently, the current specification only authorizes a business strike and not a proof. I don't know why!

I think .9999 will prove to be a mistake. They should do it in the more durable 22K. Lots of folks will be wanting to fondle this one......

I have some Investment Rarities silver rounds that look very much like that. They're smaller in diameter and very thick.

My thoughts exactly, it will be hard not to play with that.

Now this sounds good. I definitely tend to prefer coins that are smaller in diameter and a bit thicker. Probably the main reason I like silver maples over SAEs, and why gold maples are one of my favorite gold coins. This new one will be significantly smaller in diameter than even the maple. I was/am not a big fan of the buffalo at all, so maybe this one will be something I can be happy about.

I do wish they'd make it in 22k.

The US Mint did a Press Release on May 2nd. It makes for a pretty interesting read.

I agree with above comments. It would probably be better done in 22k, but none the less, it sounds like it will be a very striking coin. I can't wait to see them.

Have you seen a 4 ducat? They are 40 mm and .44 oz, you can shave with one. (am I picking up some pattern with 4's?) Actually they are exceptionally nice coins.

.9999 has always felt fine by me.

This is much better than the load of bull they have been feeding us lately.

This week's Coin World magazine is saying that bills have been introduced into the US House of Reps to:

1) strike gold Proof of the high relief St. G,

2) strike the high relief St. Gaudens in PALLADIUM :shocked_ma: :tongue_ma: :rolleyes_m:

As soon as I read about this in a COIN Magazine - I knew I'd want at least ten - especially GOLD ones since the PAPA (double eagle 1907 HR) coin is SO darn expensive!

Best wishes,

HS
